Overview

Diazepam is a long-acting benzodiazepine used primarily to treat anxiety disorders, alcohol withdrawal symptoms, muscle spasms, spasticity from neurological disorders (such as cerebral palsy and paraplegia), and seizures. It also has applications as a sedative, hypnotic for short-term management of insomnia, premedication before procedures, and in the management of alcohol withdrawal syndrome. Its mechanism of action involves enhancing the effect of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, leading to anxiolytic, anticonvulsant, sedative-hypnotic, muscle relaxant, and amnesic effects[1][2][3][4][5][8].
