Diazepam + lidocaine is a combination of two pharmaceutical agents used primarily to achieve regional anesthesia and analgesia, particularly in veterinary and procedural settings. Diazepam is a benzodiazepine that acts as a central nervous system depressant with anxiolytic, muscle relaxant, anticonvulsant, and sedative properties by enhancing the effect of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) at GABA-A receptors. Lidocaine is an amide-type local anesthetic that works by blocking voltage-gated sodium channels in neuronal membranes, thereby inhibiting nerve impulse conduction and producing localized numbness or loss of sensation. When administered together—such as via epidural injection—the combination provides both rapid onset neural blockade from lidocaine’s local anesthetic action and prolonged analgesic effects due to diazepam’s central modulation[9]. This mixture has been shown to produce longer-lasting analgesia than lidocaine alone without significant adverse effects on vital signs or blood parameters[9].
