Diazolidinylurea is a synthetic chemical compound primarily utilized as an antimicrobial preservative in a wide range of cosmetics, personal care products, and some topical pharmaceutical preparations. It functions as a formaldehyde releaser, slowly degrading to liberate formaldehyde, which acts as a broad-spectrum biocide. This mechanism effectively inhibits the growth of bacteria, yeasts, and molds, thereby extending the shelf life and preventing spoilage of products. Beyond its preservative role, Diazolidinylurea is also a known contact allergen. Exposure can lead to allergic contact dermatitis in sensitive individuals, often attributed to its formaldehyde-releasing properties, and it can trigger immune responses characterized by increased histamine release and cell-mediated immunity. It is synthesized through the chemical reaction of allantoin and formaldehyde.
