DIBI (Denying Iron to Bacterial Infections) is a synthetic, high-affinity iron-binding co-polymer developed by Fe Pharmaceuticals. It functions as an iron chelator that sequesters ferric iron (Fe3+), an essential nutrient required for the growth, metabolism, and virulence of bacterial pathogens as well as the proliferation of tumor cells. By limiting the bioavailability of iron, DIBI exerts broad-spectrum antimicrobial and antineoplastic effects. The drug is being developed in multiple formulations to address diverse indications: an inhaled version for respiratory infections in cystic fibrosis and pneumonia; an intravenous (IV) formulation for complicated urinary tract infections (cUTI) and solid tumors such as breast and colorectal cancer; an oral formulation for gastrointestinal infections; and a topical cream for wound healing and skin/soft tissue infections. In veterinary medicine, DIBI is in Phase 2 development as an otic solution for canine otitis externa. It has also demonstrated synergistic potential when used in combination with standard chemotherapy agents like cisplatin and doxorubicin.
