Overview

Dibismuth trioxide is an inorganic bismuth-based compound that serves as the active constituent (often expressed as an equivalent) in bismuth subcitrate formulations. It is primarily utilized as a component of bismuth quadruple therapy for the eradication of *Helicobacter pylori* infection, a major cause of gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, and gastric cancer. The drug's mechanism of action involves the disruption of *H. pylori* cellular function, likely through interaction with bacterial membrane proteins and the induction of membrane vesicle formation, leading to bacterial cell death. In clinical practice, it is typically administered orally in combination with a proton pump inhibitor and antibiotics such as metronidazole and tetracycline. Research led by National Taiwan University Hospital has evaluated its efficacy in multi-center randomized trials for second-line and third-line eradication regimens.
