Overview

Dibotermin alfa + absorbable collagen sponge is a combination product containing **dibotermin alfa**, a recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (**rhBMP-2**) together with an **absorbable collagen sponge** (ACS), most commonly bovine type I collagen[1][3][5]. Dibotermin alfa acts as a potent **osteoinductive protein**: it binds to receptors on the surface of mesenchymal cells, inducing their differentiation into cartilage- and bone-forming cells and promoting new trabecular bone formation at the site of implantation[1][5][3]. The absorbable collagen sponge serves as a carrier matrix, localizing the protein at the bone defect site and is fully resorbed as new bone forms[3][7]. The product is primarily indicated as an implant in adults for (1) single-level lumbar interbody spine fusion as a substitute for autogenous bone graft in degenerative disc disease, and (2) as an adjunct to standard care for the treatment of **acute tibia fractures** using open fracture reduction and intramedullary unreamed nail fixation, aimed at patients at high risk of non-union[1][2][3][5]. Faster fracture healing, reduced infections, and reduced need for secondary intervention have been observed[5]. The main marketed product is **InductOs**[2][3][5].
