Overview

Dichlorophen is a halogenated phenolic compound used primarily as an antimicrobial and antiparasitic agent. It exhibits activity against cestodes (tapeworms), protozoa, fungi, and bacteria. In veterinary medicine, it is often combined with toluene for the removal of intestinal parasites such as ascarids, hookworms, and tapeworms in dogs and cats. It has also been used in humans for the treatment of tapeworm infestations and as a topical antifungal agent (e.g., athlete’s foot). The mechanism of action involves disruption of cellular processes in microorganisms by uncoupling oxidative phosphorylation, thereby inhibiting energy production within cells[1][3][4][5][6]. Dichlorophen is also utilized as a fungicide and bactericide in cosmetics and for protecting materials from mold and algae[4].
