Overview

Dichromate refers to the chemical ion Cr2O72- and compounds containing it, such as potassium dichromate (K2Cr2O7) and sodium dichromate (Na2Cr2O7). Potassium dichromate is recognized as an allergen, particularly in the context of allergic contact dermatitis, and is used in patch testing for diagnostic purposes. In homeopathy, potassium dichromate is known as Kali Bichromicum and is investigated for its potential to reduce profuse and tenacious tracheal secretions in mechanically ventilated ICU patients, based on the "Law of Similars" and high dilutions. Sodium dichromate is utilized in research settings to induce oxidative stress in cellular and molecular studies. Beyond its direct biological applications, dichromate compounds are also widely used in various analytical and industrial processes, including the quantification of catalase activity, measurement of soil organic carbon, and detection of chromium(VI) in environmental monitoring and food safety.
