Diclazuril is a synthetic small molecule belonging to the triazines group and is classified as a benzeneacetonitrile derivative. It acts as an anticoccidial (antiprotozoal) agent with potent activity against several genera of the phylum Apicomplexa. Diclazuril is primarily used in veterinary medicine for the prevention and treatment of coccidiosis in poultry (chickens, turkeys), rabbits, and for equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM) caused by Sarcocystis neurona in horses[1][3][7]. Its mechanism involves inhibiting merozoite production and disrupting both asexual and sexual stages of coccidia parasites—thereby blocking oocyst excretion and interrupting the parasite life cycle[1][6][8]. Research suggests that diclazuril may affect cyclin-dependent kinase-related proteins such as EtCRK2 in Eimeria tenella[6]. Diclazuril has low toxicity and no known significant drug interactions.
