Overview

Diclofenac is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to treat mild-to-moderate pain and symptoms of inflammatory conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and acute migraine attacks. It is also indicated for primary dysmenorrhea and other painful conditions. Diclofenac works primarily by inhibiting cyclooxygenase enzymes (COX), especially COX-2, thereby reducing the synthesis of prostaglandins responsible for pain, inflammation, and fever. It is available in multiple formulations including oral tablets (immediate-release, delayed-release/enteric-coated, extended-release), capsules (including liquid-filled), powder for solution, topical gels/patches/solutions, rectal suppositories, ophthalmic solutions (eye drops), intramuscular injection, and intravenous injection[1][3][5][9]. Diclofenac does not cure underlying diseases but provides symptomatic relief as long as it is taken.
