Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Diclofenac Gel (specifically the formulation developed by Hanbet Pharmaceuticals) is a topical combination drug containing the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) diclofenac, along with methyl salicylate and menthol. The primary mechanism of action involves the inhibition of cyclooxygenase enzymes (COX-1 and COX-2), which prevents the synthesis of prostaglandins responsible for pain and inflammation. Methyl salicylate serves as a counter-irritant and rubefacient, while menthol provides a cooling sensation and local analgesic effect by acting on TRPM8 receptors. This specific formulation is approved by NAFDAC in Nigeria (Registration No. A4-9805) under the brand name Dicloseed Gel for the relief of pain and inflammation associated with musculoskeletal and joint conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and minor injuries.
