Overview

The term diclofenac + tramadol-Lampang Hospital-renal colic refers to a Phase 4 randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled clinical trial (NCT05354310) conducted at Lampang Hospital in Thailand. The study compared the efficacy of two separate analgesic regimens for the treatment of acute pain in adult patients presenting with renal colic (kidney stones) in the emergency department. The trial compared intramuscular (IM) diclofenac (75 mg), a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), against intravenous (IV) tramadol (50 mg), a centrally acting opioid analgesic. Diclofenac works by inhibiting cyclooxygenase enzymes (COX-1 and COX-2), thereby reducing prostaglandin synthesis and inflammation. Tramadol provides analgesia through mu-opioid receptor agonism and the inhibition of serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake. The study, conducted between April 2022 and March 2023, found that diclofenac provided faster and more effective pain relief compared to tramadol for this indication.
