Overview

Dicloxacillin is a narrow-spectrum beta-lactam antibiotic of the penicillin class, specifically classified as a penicillinase-resistant (beta-lactamase-resistant) penicillin. It is used to treat infections caused by susceptible Gram-positive bacteria, particularly those producing beta-lactamase enzymes such as *Staphylococcus aureus*. Dicloxacillin acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis through binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), thereby preventing cross-linking of peptidoglycan chains and leading to cell lysis. It is primarily indicated for mild-to-moderate staphylococcal infections, including skin and soft tissue infections, pneumonia (as adjunct therapy), osteomyelitis, septic arthritis, throat infections due to streptococcus or staphylococcus species, septicaemia, empirical treatment for endocarditis, and surgical prophylaxis[1][2][4][5][6]. Dicloxacillin is available in oral capsule form as dicloxacillin sodium.
