Overview

Dicoflor is a vaginal probiotic product, typically containing the live bacterial strain *Lactobacillus rhamnosus* GG, designed to restore and maintain a healthy vaginal microbiome. It was the subject of a Phase 2 randomized controlled trial conducted by researchers at Zagazig University in Egypt, which investigated its efficacy in treating bacterial vaginosis (BV) and preventing recurrence. In the trial, Dicoflor was administered as vaginal capsules following a standard seven-day course of clindamycin 2% vaginal cream, comparing continuous daily use for six weeks against an interrupted dosing schedule. The probiotic works by recolonizing the vaginal environment with beneficial bacteria that produce lactic acid and hydrogen peroxide, thereby inhibiting the overgrowth of pathogenic anaerobic bacteria. Notably, the primary publication associated with this trial (Elsharkawy et al., 2021) was retracted in November 2025.
