Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Dicopeg Junior is an osmotic laxative containing polyethylene glycol 3350 (macrogol 3350) as its active ingredient. It is specifically formulated for the treatment of chronic and functional constipation in children, with registration for use in infants from 6 months of age. As a non-absorbable polymer, polyethylene glycol 3350 acts by binding water in the intestinal lumen through osmotic pressure. This process prevents water absorption from the stool, resulting in softened fecal matter and increased volume, which stimulates bowel motility and facilitates defecation. The drug is characterized by its high safety profile in pediatrics as it is not metabolized by gut bacteria and is excreted unchanged in the feces, minimizing systemic absorption and associated metabolic side effects.
