Dicoria canescens pollen extract is a biological product used for the diagnosis and treatment of type I hypersensitivity (allergies) to bugseed, a desert plant in the Asteraceae family. As a diagnostic tool, it is used in skin prick or intradermal testing to identify IgE-mediated sensitization. In allergen immunotherapy (AIT), the extract is administered in escalating doses to induce immunological tolerance, characterized by a shift from a Th2-dominated allergic response to a Th1/Treg-mediated response, the production of blocking IgG4 antibodies, and reduced mast cell and basophil reactivity. It is primarily indicated for patients with allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis, or asthma triggered by bugseed pollen.
