Overview

Didesmethyl-cariprazine (DDCAR) is a major, orally active, and blood-brain barrier-permeable active metabolite of the atypical antipsychotic cariprazine. It acts as a partial agonist at dopamine D2 and D3 receptors, a full agonist at the serotonin 5-HT1A receptor, and an antagonist at the serotonin 5-HT2A and 5-HT2B receptors. With a long half-life of 1-3 weeks, DDCAR plays a significant role in the sustained therapeutic effects of cariprazine, which is used in the treatment of schizophrenia, bipolar I disorder, and major depressive disorder.
