Overview

Dietary ganglioside is a glycosphingolipid-based biologic supplement being developed by the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Administered orally, typically as a ganglioside-enriched milk fat globule membrane (MFGM) fraction, the therapy seeks to address the depletion of gangliosides in the intestinal mucosa observed in IBD patients. The proposed mechanism of action involves the restoration of ganglioside content (particularly GD3), which supports the assembly and function of tight junctions between enterocytes and modulates proinflammatory signaling pathways. It is also suggested to interact with and modulate β1 integrin signaling to maintain gut barrier integrity. Clinical results from a pilot study (NCT02139709) demonstrated that the supplement is safe, bioavailable, and associated with reduced intestinal permeability and improved quality of life metrics in patients with IBD.
