Overview

Diethylamine NONOate (DEA/NO) is a research-stage small molecule that acts as a nitric oxide (NO) donor. It belongs to the NONOate (diazeniumdiolate) class of compounds, which spontaneously release NO in aqueous solutions at a controlled, pH-dependent rate. DEA/NO is characterized by a relatively short half-life, ranging from approximately 2 to 16 minutes depending on temperature and pH, making it a valuable tool for studying the rapid biological effects of nitric oxide. Its primary biological activities include vasodilation through the activation of soluble guanylyl cyclase (sGC), antimicrobial action, and inhibition of the DNA repair enzyme O6-methylguanine-DNA-methyltransferase (MGMT) via S-nitrosylation. While it has been investigated in preclinical models for pulmonary hypertension and organ preservation, it is currently available only as a research reagent and is not approved for clinical use.
