Overview

Diethylstilbestrol (DES) is a synthetic, nonsteroidal estrogen that was historically prescribed for a variety of indications, including the prevention of miscarriage and premature labor in pregnant women, treatment of menopausal symptoms, and as therapy for breast and prostate cancer. It acts as an agonist at estrogen receptor. DES was also used as a growth promoter in animals. Its use declined after it was found to be ineffective for pregnancy support and linked to increased risks of clear cell adenocarcinoma and other adverse reproductive outcomes in those exposed prenatally. Today, its use is rare but may still occur in certain hormone-related cancers such as advanced prostate or breast cancer[1][2][3][4][5][8].
