Overview

DietPro is an herbal dietary supplement containing ephedra alkaloids, primarily ephedrine and pseudoephedrine, derived from the plant *Ephedra sinica* (Ma Huang). Historically marketed for weight loss and energy enhancement, it functions as a sympathomimetic agent by stimulating alpha- and beta-adrenergic receptors. This stimulation increases metabolic rate (thermogenesis) and suppresses appetite. The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health conducted clinical research (NCT00028067) to evaluate the safety and efficacy of DietPro on metabolism, hunger, and cardiovascular parameters in obese individuals. However, due to significant safety concerns including increased risks of hypertension, myocardial infarction, and stroke, the U.S. FDA banned the sale of dietary supplements containing ephedra alkaloids in 2004.
