Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Difloxacin is a synthetic, second-generation fluoroquinolone antibiotic used primarily in veterinary medicine. It exhibits broad-spectrum bactericidal activity against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase (topoisomerase II), an enzyme essential for DNA replication, transcription, and recombination. This inhibition disrupts the supercoiling of bacterial DNA, leading to impaired DNA synthesis and cell death. Difloxacin is approved for use in dogs to treat infections such as those of the bladder, kidneys, respiratory tract, and skin. It is not recommended for cats due to their inability to metabolize the drug safely via glucuronidation[1][2][3][4][5].
