Overview

**Diflucortolone** is a potent topical corticosteroid used primarily for the symptomatic treatment of inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema, dermatitis, seborrheic eczema, lichen planus, and (less commonly) psoriasis. It works by reducing inflammation, redness, swelling, and itching through multiple mechanisms: it induces lipocortins (phospholipase A2 inhibitory proteins), thereby inhibiting the release of arachidonic acid and the synthesis of inflammatory mediators; it also binds to the glucocorticoid receptor, modulating gene transcription to suppress pro-inflammatory cytokines and promote anti-inflammatory proteins. Available in creams and ointments (potency 0.1% and 0.3%), diflucortolone is usually prescribed in short courses for flare-ups, particularly when other lower-potency steroids are ineffective[1][3][5]. Developed by Schering AG, it was originally marketed under Nerisone and Nerisone Forte, but these brands are now discontinued in many regions[1][4][5].
