Difluprednate is a synthetic corticosteroid used as an ophthalmic emulsion for the treatment of inflammation and pain associated with ocular surgery and for endogenous anterior uveitis (an inflammatory condition of the eye)[1][3][8]. It is a butyrate ester of 6(α), 9(α)-difluoro prednisolone acetate. Difluprednate works by suppressing the immune response in ocular tissues, thereby reducing swelling, redness, and pain[4][8]. Its mechanism involves inhibition of multiple steps in the inflammatory process including edema formation, leukocyte migration, capillary dilation and proliferation, fibroblast activity, collagen deposition, and scar formation[8]. The drug is available as a sterile preserved ophthalmic emulsion (0.05%) for topical use only[7][8].
