Digitoxigenin is a cardenolide and the aglycone (non-sugar) constituent of digitoxin, derived from the foxglove plant Digitalis purpurea. It acts as a potent inhibitor of Na+/K+ ATPase by binding to the digitalis receptor site with nanomolar potency. This inhibition leads to increased intracellular sodium and calcium concentrations in cardiac cells, resulting in enhanced cardiac contractility (positive inotropic effect) and cardiotonic effects. Digitoxigenin is highly cytotoxic due to its ability to inhibit Na+/K+ ATPase-dependent protein synthesis and has been investigated for potential antitumor activity[1][2].
