Dihematoporphyrin derivative is a complex mixture of porphyrins derived from hematoporphyrin. It acts as a photosensitizer and is used in photodynamic therapy (PDT) for the treatment of various cancers and certain benign neoplasms. After intravenous administration, it selectively localizes in malignant or rapidly metabolizing tissues. Upon activation by light of a specific wavelength, it generates singlet oxygen and other reactive oxygen species that induce cytotoxicity and tissue destruction at the targeted site[2][6][10]. Its mechanism relies on photoactivation to produce localized oxidative damage. Dihematoporphyrin derivative was one of the first clinically used photosensitizers for PDT[9]. It has also been investigated for bactericidal effects when activated by light[3].
