Overview

Dihuang Yinzi is a classical traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) herbal prescription used primarily for neurological disorders. It is composed of multiple herbs including Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Preparata), Shan Zhu Yu (Fr. Corni), Jiu Bei Rou Cong Rong (Cistanche deserticola), Ba Ji Tian (Morinda officinalis), Zhi Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Preparata), Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Recens), and Da Zao (Jujube). The formula is traditionally used to nourish kidney Yin and Yang, resolve phlegm, open the orifices, and treat symptoms such as aphasia and paralysis due to kidney deficiency[2]. Modern research suggests Dihuang Yinzi exerts multi-targeted neuroprotective effects by modulating energy metabolism pathways—such as glycerophospholipid metabolism, nicotinate/nicotinamide metabolism, glycolysis, and the tricarboxylic acid cycle—and reducing oxidative stress in neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's disease[5]. Clinical studies have reported its use in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis[1][8], spinal cord injury[4][7], ischemic stroke[6], Parkinson's disease dementia[8], and other neurological conditions. Its mechanisms are believed to involve modulation of targets such as diamine oxidase (DAO), hypoxia-inducible factor 1-alpha (HIF1A), poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase 1 (PARP1), aldehyde dehydrogenase 3 family member B2 (ALDH3B2), and acetylcholinesterase (ACHE)[5].
