Overview

Dihydro-acarbose is a synthetic derivative of acarbose, belonging to the class of aminocyclitol glycosides and aminosaccharides. It is structurally similar to acarbose, an alpha-glucosidase inhibitor used in the management of type 2 diabetes. Dihydro-acarbose shares the core mechanism of action with acarbose by inhibiting enzymes responsible for carbohydrate digestion in the intestine, thereby reducing postprandial blood glucose spikes. The compound has a molecular formula C25H45NO18 and a molecular weight of approximately 647.6 g/mol[3][6]. While detailed clinical data on dihydro-acarbose itself are limited, its parent compound (acarbose) is well established as an oral antidiabetic agent that acts locally in the gut to delay carbohydrate absorption[5].
