Overview

Dihydroaustrasulfone alcohol, also known by the code name WA-25, is a marine-derived small molecule and the synthetic precursor of austrasulfone, a natural product originally isolated from the Formosan soft coral *Cladiella australis*. It has been investigated for its potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, particularly in the context of skin diseases. Research indicates that WA-25 can alleviate atopic dermatitis (AD) by reducing skin barrier dysfunction, transepidermal water loss (TEWL), and pruritus. Its therapeutic mechanism is primarily mediated through the modulation of nucleophosmin (NPM), a protein that plays a dual role in regulating inflammatory and oxidative stress pathways. Preclinical studies suggest that WA-25 may be more effective than some current clinical standards for AD treatment.
