Dihydroergocornine is a semisynthetic ergot alkaloid and one of the three main components of ergoloid mesylates (also known as Hydergine). It is derived from ergocornine by hydrogenation of double bonds in lysergic acid. Dihydroergocornine has been used primarily to treat dementia and age-related cognitive impairment, including conditions such as Alzheimer's disease. Its mechanism of action is not fully established but it exhibits sympatholytic and hypotensive properties, decreases cerebral blood flow and vascular resistance, and may help maintain cerebral metabolic homeostasis. Pharmacologically, it acts as a dopamine agonist with possible activity at serotonergic receptors and alpha-adrenoreceptors[1][2][3][7].
