Overview

Dihydrolipoic acid is the reduced form of lipoic acid and is a naturally occurring dithiol compound. It features two thiol groups and acts as a potent antioxidant, directly scavenging reactive oxygen species such as superoxide, hydroperoxy, and hydroxyl radicals. Dihydrolipoic acid plays an important role in cellular metabolism by participating in redox reactions within mitochondria and serving as a cofactor for enzyme complexes involved in energy production (notably the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex). The R-enantiomer is biochemically significant. Dihydrolipoic acid has demonstrated neuroprotective and anti-tumor effects in experimental settings but is primarily used as a research chemical or dietary supplement rather than an approved pharmaceutical drug[1][3][4][8].

Other names
DHLA6,8-dimercaptooctanoic acid
