"Dihydroquinidine barbiturate" refers to a hypothetical or descriptive combination of dihydroquinidine and a barbiturate. Dihydroquinidine (also known as hydroquinidine) is a cinchona alkaloid and a Class Ia antiarrhythmic medication that acts as a potent ion channel blocker, prolonging the QT interval and exhibiting antiarrhythmic efficacy. It has also shown anti-cancer activity in research settings. Barbiturates are a class of central nervous system depressant drugs derived from barbituric acid, primarily used as anxiolytics, hypnotics, and anticonvulsants. They potentiate the effect of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) at GABA-A receptors, increasing chloride ion flux and causing CNS depression, and also block AMPA and kainate receptors. While barbiturates have largely been replaced by benzodiazepines due to safety concerns, they are still used in specific medical contexts such as general anesthesia and refractory epilepsy.
