Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is an endogenous androgen sex steroid and hormone that plays a central role in male sexual development and physiology. It is primarily involved in the growth and repair of the prostate and penis, as well as influencing sebum production and body hair composition. DHT is formed from testosterone by the action of the enzyme 5α-reductase in tissues such as the prostate gland, skin, liver, hair follicles, seminal vesicles, epididymides, and brain. Compared to testosterone, DHT has a much higher affinity for the androgen receptor (AR), making it a more potent agonist with stronger androgenic effects. As a medication (also known as androstanolone or stanolone), it is used mainly to treat low testosterone levels in men and certain conditions like breast development or micropenis in males. It is typically administered topically as a gel under brand names such as Andractim[1][3][5][6].
