Overview

Dihydroxydibutylether is a mixture of hydroxy ethers composed primarily of three isomers—4-(3-hydroxybutoxy)-2-butanol (I), 3-(3-hydroxybutoxy)-n-butyl alcohol (II), and 3-(3-hydroxy-1-methylpropoxy)-n-butyl alcohol (III). It has been developed as an adjuvant drug for liver and gallbladder diseases. The compound acts as a bidirectional choleretic agent with cholagogic (promoting bile flow), anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic effects; it also protects the liver and promotes lipid metabolism. Dihydroxydibutylether was first developed by Laphal in France and marketed under the brand name "Bao Dan" for use in treating hepatic and biliary disorders[9][1].
