Overview

Diiodohydroxyquinoline is a quinoline derivative antiprotozoal agent primarily used as a luminal amebicide for the treatment of intestinal amoebiasis. It is poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and acts locally in the intestinal lumen. Its mechanism of action is not fully understood but may involve chelation of ferrous ions essential for protozoal metabolism. It is active against both cyst and trophozoite forms of *Entamoeba histolytica* localized in the intestine and has also been used to enhance zinc absorption in acrodermatitis enteropathica due to its function as a zinc ionophore[1][2][4]. The drug was originally discovered by Adco Co.[4].
