Overview
Diluted deodorized tincture of opium (DTO) is a pharmaceutical preparation that consists of a 25-fold dilution of standard deodorized (denarcotized) tincture of opium. The original deodorized tincture is an oral solution containing morphine and other alkaloids derived from the dried latex of the poppy plant (Papaver somniferum), with most emetic alkaloids like noscapine removed to reduce side effects. DTO is used primarily as an antidiarrheal agent and for neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome, where precise dosing and reduced potency are required compared to full-strength opium tincture. Its mechanism involves binding to opioid receptors in the gastrointestinal tract, reducing gut motility and secretion, thereby controlling diarrhea[4][9]. The main active ingredient responsible for its pharmacological effect is morphine.
