Overview

Dimaval is a small molecule chelating agent developed by Heyl Chemisch-pharmazeutische Fabrik. Its active ingredient is sodium 2,3-dimercaptopropane-1-sulfonate (DMPS). The drug functions by utilizing two adjacent sulfhydryl (SH) groups to bind heavy metal ions, forming stable, water-soluble complexes that are primarily excreted through the kidneys. It is indicated for the treatment of acute and chronic poisoning from heavy metals, including mercury (organic and inorganic), lead, arsenic, bismuth, copper, and cobalt. Dimaval is available in oral capsule and injectable formulations and has been approved in Germany since 1997.
