Overview

Dimefline is a small molecule respiratory stimulant belonging to the class of 7-O-methylated flavonoids. It has been primarily used for the treatment of respiratory insufficiency and related conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), bronchial asthma, and pulmonary emphysema. Dimefline acts by stimulating both peripheral chemoreceptors and central respiratory centers, leading to increased depth and efficiency of respiration without significantly increasing the rate. Its mechanism involves antagonism of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors in the central nervous system, which increases neuronal excitability and enhances phrenic nerve discharges that control diaphragm movement. The drug has a brief duration of action and is contraindicated in patients with epilepsy or severe neurological conditions[1][4][5][6][8].
