Overview

Dimethindene maleate is a **first-generation selective histamine H1 antagonist** and **anticholinergic** used for the symptomatic treatment of allergic reactions (such as urticaria, hay fever, perennial rhinitis, food and drug allergies), pruritus of various origins (insect bites, eczema, chickenpox, other pruriginous dermatoses), and as an adjuvant in allergic skin conditions[1][2][3]. It may also be used to treat anaphylactic shock and respiratory allergies. The drug acts primarily by blocking the **histamine H1 receptor** in a competitive and selective manner, offering relief of allergy symptoms[1][3][6]. The compound is also an antagonist of the **muscarinic acetylcholine receptor M2**, with minor affinity for other muscarinic subtypes[1][6]. The maleate salt form is commonly used in pharmaceutical products for improved stability and solubility.
