Dimethyl phthalate is a small molecule organic compound classified as a benzoic acid ester. It is primarily used as a plasticizer in the manufacture of plastics such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and also serves as an ingredient in insect repellents and various industrial applications including lacquers, adhesives, coatings for cellulose films and fibers, explosives manufacturing, printing inks and paper coatings. Dimethyl phthalate is absorbed via the gastrointestinal tract or skin but is rapidly cleared from the body with no significant accumulation. Toxicological data indicate low acute toxicity; chronic exposure may affect kidneys and other organs in animal studies. There is insufficient evidence to classify it regarding carcinogenicity or reproductive toxicity in humans. Its mechanism of action when used as an insect repellent does not involve direct binding to estrogen or androgen receptors[3][4][5][7].
