Dimethyl sulfoxide is a small-molecule polar aprotic solvent with tissue-penetrating, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and vasodilatory pharmacologic effects that are not attributable to a single defined molecular target. In the United States, a sterile 50% aqueous dimethyl sulfoxide product is marketed as RIMSO-50 for intravesical symptomatic relief of interstitial cystitis. Dimethyl sulfoxide is also used topically as a pharmaceutical vehicle and penetration enhancer; Mahidol University evaluated 30% topical dimethyl sulfoxide alone versus topical amphotericin B in 30% dimethyl sulfoxide in a randomized pilot study of non-dermatophyte onychomycosis.
