Dimethyl trisulfide (DMTS) is an organic chemical compound and the simplest organic trisulfide, with the formula C2H6S3. It occurs naturally in garlic, onion, broccoli, and other plants[1][3][4]. DMTS acts as a sulfur donor and has been studied primarily as a cyanide antidote; it converts toxic cyanide to much less toxic thiocyanate *in vivo*[3][5][7]. Unlike sodium thiosulfate, DMTS is lipophilic and effective even without rhodanese enzyme activity. It can be administered intramuscularly for rapid response in mass casualty scenarios involving cyanide poisoning[5][7]. In animal models, DMTS has shown greater efficacy than thiosulfate for clearing cyanide toxicity[5]. Additionally, DMTS exhibits anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties in preclinical studies by reducing leukocyte infiltration and cellular damage during acute pancreatitis; it also upregulates heat shock protein 72 (HSP72) expression[8].
