Overview

Dimethyltryptamine (DMT) + harmine is an ayahuasca-inspired combination therapy being investigated by the Psychiatric University Hospital, Zurich for the treatment of depressive disorder and anxiety. The formulation consists of harmine, a reversible inhibitor of monoamine oxidase A (RIMA), administered as an orodispersible tablet, and N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT), a serotonergic psychedelic, administered intranasally. Harmine serves to inhibit the metabolic breakdown of DMT by monoamine oxidase, thereby extending its duration of action and potentially enhancing its therapeutic efficacy. DMT primarily acts as an agonist at the 5-HT2A serotonin receptor, inducing profound changes in perception, neurodynamics, and emotional processing. This combination is intended to facilitate psychological insights and emotional breakthroughs with lasting positive effects on prosociality and mental health.
