Dimeticone, also known as polydimethylsiloxane or PDMS, is a synthetic silicone oil widely used in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and medical devices. It acts primarily as an occlusive and emollient agent by forming a hydrophobic film on the skin surface to prevent transepidermal water loss. In topical applications, it is used to treat dry skin conditions and minor irritations by moisturizing and protecting the skin. As an anti-flatulent agent when ingested, it reduces surface tension of gas bubbles in the gastrointestinal tract to facilitate their expulsion. Dimeticone is also approved for use as a physical pediculicide for head lice; it kills lice through suffocation by coating their respiratory system with its viscous solution—a mechanism that makes resistance development unlikely. Dimeticone is considered non-toxic and physiologically inert in humans[1][4][6][8].
