Overview

Ding Chuan Tang (DCT) is a traditional Chinese herbal decoction used primarily for the treatment of bronchial asthma and respiratory conditions characterized by wheezing, coughing, and phlegm. The formula is typically composed of nine herbs: *Ephedra sinica* (Ma Huang), *Ginkgo biloba* (Bai Guo), *Prunus armeniaca* (Xing Ren), *Morus alba* (Sang Bai Pi), *Perilla frutescens* (Su Zi), *Tussilago farfara* (Kuan Dong Hua), *Aster tataricus* (Zi Wan), *Scutellaria baicalensis* (Huang Qin), and *Glycyrrhiza uralensis* (Gan Cao). In traditional medicine, it is designed to diffuse the Lung, direct Qi downward, and clear heat. Modern clinical research indicates that DCT can improve airway hyper-responsiveness (AHR) and reduce airway inflammation in stabilized asthmatic children, potentially serving as an effective add-on complementary therapy. Its pharmacological effects are attributed to the synergistic action of its components, including bronchodilation from ephedrine and anti-inflammatory effects from baicalin.
