Overview

Dinoprost is a naturally occurring prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2α) that acts as a potent agonist at the prostanoid FP receptor. In human medicine, it is primarily used for the induction of labor, termination of pregnancy (abortion) during the second trimester, and the management of postpartum hemorrhage due to its ability to stimulate strong myometrial contractions. In veterinary medicine, dinoprost is widely utilized for luteolysis and estrus synchronization in livestock such as cattle, swine, and horses. Beyond its reproductive applications, dinoprost exerts effects on other smooth muscles, notably causing bronchoconstriction (particularly in asthmatic patients) and influencing intraocular pressure, which led to the development of prostaglandin analogs for glaucoma treatment.
