Dinoprostone is a naturally occurring prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) used primarily to induce labor or abortion and to prepare the cervix for the induction of labor in pregnant women at or near term. It acts as a uterotonic agent by stimulating the myometrium (uterine muscle) to contract in a manner similar to natural labor contractions. Dinoprostone also promotes cervical ripening by breaking down collagen in the cervix, leading to softening, effacement, and dilation. The drug may also stimulate smooth muscle elsewhere in the body and has been used off-label for other gynecological indications such as treatment of nonmetastatic gestational trophoblastic disease[1][2][5]. Its mechanism involves direct stimulation of prostaglandin receptors on uterine smooth muscle cells; additional effects may include regulation of calcium transport and cyclic AMP levels within cells[2][5].
