Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Dinotefuran is a third-generation neonicotinoid insecticide of the furanicotinyl subclass, discovered and developed by Mitsui Chemicals. It features a unique tetrahydrofuran ring structure that distinguishes it from first- and second-generation neonicotinoids containing chloropyridine or chlorothiazole rings. Dinotefuran acts as an agonist of insect nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) in the central nervous system, causing continuous overstimulation of neurons, which leads to rapid feeding cessation, paralysis, and death. It is highly systemic, exhibiting translaminar and contact activity, and is widely used in agriculture to control sucking and chewing pests (such as aphids, whiteflies, thrips, and leafhoppers). In veterinary medicine, it is utilized as a topical ectoparasiticide (often in combination with pyriproxyfen and/or permethrin under brand names like Vectra and Vectra 3D) to prevent and treat flea and tick infestations in dogs and cats.
