Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Dioralyte is an oral rehydration therapy (ORT) indicated for the correction of fluid and electrolyte loss and the management of watery diarrhoea in infants, children, and adults. It consists of a balanced combination of glucose, sodium chloride, potassium chloride, and disodium hydrogen citrate. Dioralyte works by exploiting the sodium-glucose cotransporter 1 (SGLT1) in the small intestine, where the active co-transport of sodium and glucose creates an osmotic gradient that drives passive water absorption back into the bloodstream. Originally developed by Rorer (which subsequently became Rhône-Poulenc Rorer, Aventis, and Sanofi), the brand was acquired by Phoenix Laboratories in 2023.
