Overview

Dioscorea bulbifera polysaccharide (DBLP) is a bioactive carbohydrate extract derived from the tubers of *Dioscorea bulbifera* L., a plant traditionally utilized in Chinese medicine (commonly known as air potato). Composed primarily of glucose, galacturonic acid, and galactose, DBLP is being investigated as a therapeutic adjuvant in oncology, particularly for cervical cancer. Preclinical studies indicate that DBLP possesses intrinsic anti-tumor properties and acts synergistically with cyclophosphamide (CTX) to enhance tumor growth inhibition. Mechanistically, it functions as an immunomodulator by protecting the thymus and spleen from chemotherapy-induced atrophy and modulating T-cell subpopulation ratios. Additionally, DBLP serves as an antioxidant, significantly increasing superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and reducing markers of oxidative stress and tissue damage, such as malondialdehyde (MDA) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH).
